Background
The AkzoNobel Science Awards are presented annually in recognition of outstanding scientific contributions by individuals in the fields of chemistry and materials science.
First offered in the Netherlands in 1970 - when it was known as the Akzo Prize - the presentation of the award was extended to Sweden in 1991and it was re-named the Akzo Nobel Science Award.
To reflect the global nature of the company and in particular its growing presence in Asia, the presentation of the Award has recently been further extended to China. So presentations of AkzoNobel Science Awards are now made in the Netherlands and Sweden in alternate years and in China every other year.
Award winners are selected by independent panels set up by respected learned organizations in all three countries. In the Netherlands, our partner is the Royal Holland Society of Sciences & Humanities (KHMW); in Sweden, our partner is the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA); and in China, our partner is the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS).
